Today, where and how one lives is becoming a question of personal identity. Whilst the dream of detached suburban living persists, the need for customized living spaces is growing, be these shared accommodation, garden homes, (semi-) sheltered housing, housing for young people or those over 55. In addition to normal size lots for detached and terraced homes, the urban development concept for a new settlement in Harburg, Elfenwiese, proposes 14 smaller wooden houses, integrated in an existing orchard. Future residents forgo enclosed gardens, garages and cellars. In return, they reap the benefits of an established ambiance and, potentially, of unusual community developments that no terraced house could ever offer.
