Free play on the harbour pier
Aarhus will be the European Capital of Culture in 2017. For many young people in the predominantly rural western region of Denmark, the city is mostly only a transient stop en route to Copenhagen. Through new urban districts in the harbour area and cultural activities Aarhus is trying to develop its own profile and stop the brain drain. With Klaus Overmeyer 15 architecture students from Aarhus University designed an alternative spatial utopia beyond the local cultural institutions in the centre. A harbour pier, which is scheduled for demolition as part of a new ferry terminal development, was used as a stage for a different view of the city’s cultural practice.
