YOUNG PEOPLE REVITALISING EMPTY PROPERTY
Young people build towns and cities
Across Germany 218 youth projects applied for funding from the programme "Young people in city districts" sponsored by the Ministry for Transport, Construction and Urban Development. The most important criteria to select successful projects were self-organisation and self-initiative. Applicants had to show that young people themselves are the driving force behind the project: developing forms of use, finding sponsors and fellow campaigners, converting rooms or even entire houses and setting up a long-term funding framework. Twelve initiatives were selected and the winners spent over a year transforming unused space into Young People Build projects. Urban Catalyststudio provided assistance. Numerous workshops with the project participants, project visits and a national conference prove that young people have huge untapped urban planning potential. The principal areas of activity and the tools are summarised in the research publication.
